A coastal landmark on the Gargano
On the Gargano Peninsula, Baia delle Zagare is one of Puglia’s most recognisable stretches of coast. The bay is framed by pale limestone cliffs and two sea stacks known locally as Le Due Sorelle, the Two Sisters. Against the deep blue Adriatic, the rock formations give this small shoreline a theatrical sense of place without losing its calm.
The appeal is as much about the setting as the water. White pebbles, clear shallows and pine-covered slopes make the bay feel distinct from Puglia’s longer sandy beaches. It is a fine reminder that the region’s coastline can change character dramatically within a single journey.
Nature beyond the shore
Baia delle Zagare sits within the wider landscape of the Gargano, where the coast gives way to woodland and limestone. Nearby, the Foresta Umbra offers a different pace: shaded walking country, native vegetation and the quiet contrast of an ancient forest after the brightness of the sea.
This combination of beach, cliff and woodland is what makes the area rewarding for travellers who prefer to linger. A morning by the water can be followed by an inland walk, a scenic drive or a slow meal built around Puglia’s olive oil, seafood and local produce.
A Puglian pause
Baia delle Zagare works best as part of a broader Gargano itinerary rather than a hurried stop. The view rewards unstructured time: look across the water, notice the changing colour near the rocks, and let the landscape do the work. It is an enduring picture of northern Puglia, shaped by geology, vegetation and the Adriatic.
